John Moore’s Reliable Electrical Services in Tomball

As is the case with many homes built before the 1990s, outdated wiring and circuit panels can compromise the safety of you and your family. Many older homes utilize electrical panels and wiring systems that are prone to overheating, overcurrents, and short circuits that can potentially lead to sparks, fires, and explosions. Connecting new appliances to faulty breakers and outdated wiring could overload your electrical system, leading to a potentially dangerous malfunction. Even something as inconspicuous as a flickering light or an outlet that has stopped working could be a sign of a larger problem. Whether your home is aging, you’re planning a renovation, or it’s time to schedule a new home’s first inspection, it is very important to have a licensed and insured technician inspect your electrical system to ensure your home’s electrical system is up to code.

Breaker Panel Inspection

Tomball Breaker Panel Repairs & Replacements

Your home’s breaker panel (also sometimes referred to as a distribution panel, electrical panel, or breaker box) is the heart of all electrical activity in your home. The breaker panel distributes power to each light, socket, and appliance in your home. But if an excess amount of electronics are running on one outlet or in one room, the breaker panel may automatically cut off power to that room upon detection of unsafe energy usage to prevent possible damage or even fire. Older panels may not include this important safety feature, which is why you should check to see if your panel is outdated or has been recalled. If your distribution panel is outdated, you should have it replaced with a safe, new panel as soon as possible.

Over the years, breaker panels age like any other part of your home. Wear and tear, pests, and corrosion are just a few of the possible issues you may face with an older breaker box. Frequent power surges can even lead to internal malfunctions. If you notice black burn marks on the panel or have a circuit that won’t reset, it’s time for an inspection by a licensed electrician, who can then make necessary replacements and updates to your breaker box. Even if obvious signs of wear aren’t immediately noticeable, it’s always best to have your breaker box inspected every few years to ensure the safety of your home.

Is it time for your breaker panel to be inspected or replaced? Call John Moore at 713-730-2525.

Renovating for Safety in Tomball’s Vintage Homes

Your home’s electrical grid is the most important part of the home to keep well-inspected. Modern wiring is made of copper and is insulated with PVC. But due to outdated wiring standards, some Tomball area homes built prior to the 1990s may utilize wires made of aluminum and insulated by cheap plastic. Aluminum is prone to overheating, which in turn may damage the plastic used to insulate it. Modern electricians have opted to use copper wires insulated with PVC to prevent electrical fires, but in many older homes the problem persists without proper inspection.

In addition to inspecting for overheating aluminum wiring, the plastic insulation used in older wiring methods is known to brittle over time and can crumb, leaving portions of wiring exposed. If exposed wiring connects with a conductor behind the wall, it can lead to sparks and electrical fires. Even newer wiring systems insulated with PVC may become exposed if you have rodents like mice or rats inside your walls.

If you are experiencing a buzzing sound from behind your walls, switches that don’t work, or lights that flicker, call a licensed electrician to inspect your home’s wiring system.
