Why Electrical Services Matter in Houston Heights Homes

With many older and newly renovated homes, it’s especially important to make sure that your electrical system is working as it should if you live in the Heights. We find that many older heights homes still rely on outdated wiring systems and electrical panels that are more likely to overheat and cause electrical damage or fires in home. If you are considering renovation work in your home, you should have your electrical system inspected to ensure that it’s up-to-code before installing new appliances, or else you could risk overloading your electrical system. Even what could seem like a small electrical malfunction- a flickering light or outlet that doesn’t work- could mean there is a larger problem within your wall like poorly insulated wires that could lead to larger problems in the future.

Notice: If you are currently dealing with a sparking live wire, smoke, or fire caused by your electrical system, immediately call your electrical provider and ask them turn off your home’s electricity. Call the Houston Heights Fire Department at (713) 861-4002 to extinguish any fires before calling John Moore.

Breaker Panel Inspection

Breaker Panel Repairs and Replacements in The Heights

Your breaker panel (also sometimes referred to as a distribution panel, electrical panel, or breaker box) is the heart of your home’s electrical system. It distributes all of the electricity that enters your home from the power grid to the appropriate appliance, light fixture, or outlet. Breaker panels can also detect when unsafe amounts of electricity are being pulled from a specific appliance or outlet and shut power off to that area of the home. Older panels may not include this important safety feature, which is why you should check to see if your panel is outdated or has been recalled. If your distribution panel is outdated, you should have it replaced with a new, dafe panel as soon as possible.

As breaker panels age, a multitude of problems may arise. Insects often find their way into electrical panels, where they can short various circuits. Frequent power surges may also lead to a circuit malfunction or even cause a fuse to explode within your breaker box. If you notice that a circuit won’t reset on your breaker panel, or there are black marks on the panel itself, you should have your electrical panel inspected by a licensed electrician who can then make any necessary replacements. Even if you don’t notice any major issues, It’s good practice to have your electrical panel inspected every few years, especially if you plan on adding any new appliances.

Call 713-730-2525 to schedule a licensed John Moore electrician for all your breaker panel needs.

Rewiring Heights Homes to be Safer and More Efficient

Behind your homes walls, wires carry electricity from your distribution panel to the various lights, outlets, and appliances around your home. When you flip a light switch, for instance, wires carry a signal to your electrical panel that then outputs the electricity needed to turn on that light. Contemporary electrical wires are made of copper and are insulated with PVC. It’s not uncommon to find electrical wires made of aluminum with a cheaper plastic insulator in homes built before the 1990s.

The problem with these older wiring systems is that aluminum has less electrical resistance, meaning it is more likely to overheat and potentially melt the insulation it’s inside of. Furthermore, non-PVC insulators are known to brittle over time, which means that you could have an exposed wire behind your walls. When exposed wires come into contact with another conductor, it can lead to sparks and electrical fires. Mice, rats, and other pests are also known to chew through wire insulation as well.

If you have flickering lights in your home, outlets or switches that don’t work, or if you hear a buzzing sound from behind your walls, you should call a licensed electrician to inspect your home’s wiring system.
