However, R-22 systems are an environmental hazard and the refrigerant will no longer be for sale in the U.S. after 2020. This means even minor leaks may soon be cause for total system replacement. Upgrading now saves you the pain of an A/C emergency later on and may give your family the opportunity to take advantage of tax breaks and rebates for a new system.
