One of the Youngest Plumbers in Texas

Call him the Doogie Howser of Plumbing.

At age 21, Cameron O’Connor is the youngest Journeyman Plumber at Houston-based John Moore Services.  But he’s likely one of the youngest Licensed Journeyman Plumbers in the State of Texas.  Why?

In Texas, applicants must be at least 18 years old, have a high school degree or GED, and have a minimum of 8,000 hours (about four years) of specially documented on-the-job experience. And that’s not even counting the other required special training classes, exams, etc.

And Cameron started his career in the trades after he graduated from high school at age 16.

My father encouraged me to go straight to work after I graduated,” O’Connor remembers.

His suggestion led O’Connor to an apprenticeship with a new construction plumbing company, where he discovered that he enjoyed the work and wanted to pursue licensed plumbing as a career.  “I stuck to it, and now five years down the road, I’m a Journeyman Plumber at age 21,” says O’Connor. “I love my job. And I love the career path that I chose.”

In recent years, more and more high school graduates are choosing to head off to college over pursuing jobs in the skilled-trades, such as plumbing, electrical, HVAC service and repair.  As a result, the demand for and salaries of skilled-trade workers have continued to increase.

“I have nothing bad to say about going to college, but I don't understand why you're always taught you HAVE to go to college," says O’Connor.  “I have friends that went to college and are now in debt and dropping out to work at a fast food restaurant.  They don't know what career they want to take.”

O’Connor’s advice?  “If you're young and looking for a career I highly recommend plumbing as a career path.”
