When and How to Reseal Granite Countertops

Granite Bathroom CountertopsEarlier this week, we discussed care tips for your home's granite countertops in order to make their beauty and shine last longer. And while with proper care, you may not need to reseal your granite countertops very often, let's talk about circumstances that may require you to do so and how you should most effectively go about doing it.

When to Reseal Granite Countertops

Waiting until you start to notice stains and damage is the wrong approach. The whole purpose of sealant is to protect your granite countertops from incurring those stains to begin with, so regular resealing is vital. Sealant should be reapplied every 1-3 years for maximum protection, more often if you have a high-traffic kitchen and would like added peace of mind. Note: not all brands of granite require resealing this often, so do check with your manufacturer before purchasing sealant.

How to Reseal Granite Countertops

  1. Thoroughly clean and dry your countertops.
  2. With a clean rag or a spray bottle, evenly apply sealant to your countertops.
  3. Allow the sealant to set and completely dry before proceeding.
  4. When almost dry, apply another layer, and wipe with a clean towel.
  5. Wait a couple more hours (or until thoroughly dry), and apply a second layer. Repeat these steps for a third or fourth layer for maximum protection.

Application and drying times will vary based on the sealant you choose, so make sure to follow the directions carefully.
