How to Make Your Home's Windows more Energy-Efficient

Old WindowDuring the hottest months of the year, we like to do everything we can to reduce our dependence on our necessary, but pricey, air conditioners. One of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to do so is by focusing on our windows.

The first thing to target when attempting to make your windows more energy-efficient is air leaks.

Whether from your home settling, everyday wear and tear, or any other factor, gaps can develop around your home's windows. If you can see light coming through a space between your window and its frame, then you have leaks.

Air leaks around windows can be filled with either weatherstripping or caulking. Weatherstripping comes in a number of materials, but foam weatherstripping is undoubtedly the simplest to use and most affordable. You simply adhere the foam weatherstripping to your window frame, and the foam will fill up any of those gaps that had light shining through them.

Caulking requires a bit more work but is still very effective in stopping up air leaks. This involves squeezing caulking into holes around the window frame. If your window frame has existing caulking, be sure to remove it before applying new caulking. Remember to follow your product's instructions to ensure proper application.

Another added benefit to weatherstripping and caulking: filling those gaps around your windows can stop moisture as well as bugs and other small critters from invading your home.

To further reduce heat gain in your home, install curtains, drapes, indoor sun shades, or solar screens on the outside of your home. Solar screens block sunlight from coming into your home period, and indoor curtains and shades help keep sun that does permeate your windows from heating the rest of the house.
