Cleaning your Air Conditioner Registers

Air Conditioner RegisterAir conditioner registers are commonly found on the ceilings of most rooms in your home. Larger rooms may have two or more registers (vents) to circulate air throughout your home, and small rooms like closets may not have them at all. Like any other vent on any appliance in your home, the cleaner your ceiling registers are, the more efficiently they perform. And the more efficiently they perform, you got it ... the more money you save on energy costs!

Let's take a look at how simple cleaning your air conditioner registers can be:

  1. Step 1: Unscrew the grill from the ceiling. There should be two screws on opposite sides of the grill, and removal should be simple.
  2. Step 2: If you see dust and grime, particularly in your bathroom or kitchen registers, use a simple hose attachment on your vacuum cleaner to remove all the debris. This will help ensure proper air flow and can help extend the life of your air conditioning system and vent fans.
  3. Step 3: If the grill itself is grimy, soak it in a mixture of bleach and water to restore it to new.
  4. Step 4: Once everything is clean, carefully screw the grill back to ceiling, and you're good to go!
