Save Money and Help the Environment

Energy efficient insulation saves money. According to the Wyoming Energy Conservation Network, on average, U.S. households spend $1,300 per year on energy bills, a cost that is largely caused by improper or inefficient insulation.

Air leaks around un-insulated windows, walls, attics or cracks are one of the top reasons for extra high heating costs in homes during the winter, and air conditioning costs in the summer, but it doesn't have to be that way.

Insulating exterior cavities and obtaining additional attic insulation can help reduce your heating and cooling losses by up to 30%. But first, key insulation problem areas must be identified. Common insulation problem areas include:

  • Sill plates and band joints at the tops of foundation walls;
  • Areas along attic openings;
  • Areas surrounding light fixtures and ceiling fans;
  • The area behind electrical outlets and switches;
  • Exterior walls; and finally
  • Areas surrounding plumbing pipes in ceilings and floors.

Once these areas have been identified, caulking, and sealing these unwanted cracks and openings can begin.

"It's really inexpensive, and most home owners can do it themselves," says Norm Long, of SourceGas, a natural gas utility company that serves communities from 20 to 50,000 people across the Western United States.

Green Building Products Help the Environment

While saving money on energy bills is reason enough to make sure that your home is properly insulated, insulating your home plays a larger role in society. Research has shown that the use of green varieties of insulation can help make more efficient use of energy in homes, thus helping the environment.

Additionally, proper insulation can make for a quieter, healthier living environment, as insulation both absorbs sound and combats the growth of mold and mildew in homes.
